Welcome to the Official Golden Gate Navioneers Home Page

The Golden Gate Navioneers are a group of Navion owners, pilots and enthusiasts in Northern California and surrounding areas who have joined together to share the love of these remarkable airplanes. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the preservation and flight of Navions. Dues are modest and we hope you will feel that the rewards are great. Please join us at one of our events and see if you don't agree.

Yours truly, Ken Whittall-Scherfee

President 2008

It's Fly-In Season! Now is a great time to enjoy flight in your Navion and also to show your plane for public viewing. If you display your Navion at least twelve times during 2008 and receive a written display certificate, you will likely be able to avoid paying California property tax on your plane for 2008. If you don't fly too far from home, displaying your Navion might actually completely offset your fuel costs to fly with tax savings Or, in other words, the governor wants to pay you to fly and display your beautiful Navion! Just another reason to be active in the Golden Gate Navioneers. Please Note: If you have displayed your plane at one of our events and did NOT receive a display certificate, let me know and I will provide you with a Certificate at the Concord Fly-In in July (see below).

So, here's the schedule through December 2008:

1. July 1 through July 5, 2008: American Navion Society National Convention at Dayton, Ohio. At least two of our members will attend, and so can you. It is past the deadline for registration, but contact Alyce at the ANS (see your Navioneer magazine for details) to see about getting in if you have not registered already.

2. July 19, 2008: Concord, California (KCCR), aka Buchanan Field. Bob Gonzalez has generously offered to assist with logistics and dining venue selection. We will arrive at KCCR at 10:15 a.m. for hanger inspections - - many of our members are based at CCR, and a fly-in at your field gives you a chance to show other members how spotless you keep your hanger. After hanger inspections, we will go to a local restaurant - to be announced - for socializing some more. If you're not familiar with the Concord area, ask a local about local air tours to enjoy on your way home. Contra Costa county and its surroundings are beautiful to see from the air.

3. August 2, 2008. Auburn, California (KAUN) for "Thunder in the Sky 2008." Aircraft displays and fly-bys including warbirds, antiques, race planes, classics, and a PANCAKE BREAKFAST. Hours are 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Let's meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Wings Grill to assemble for breakfast. This should be a great opportunity to pick-up another Certificate of Display at a delightful airport.

4. August 23, 2008. Paso Robles, California (KPRB). Fly-In for an inspection and dining experience at Matthew's at the Airport. This airport restaurant may be one of the best in the West, based on feedback in the publication known as "The One Hundred Dollar Hamburger." We will find out on August 23. Plan to arrive by 11:20 a.m. when we will meet at Matthew's. If time permits, make it a weekend in Paso, famous for its wine country as shown in a recent movie that made a lot of fun of merlot. Paso is only at 836' elevation, so density altitude should not be a big issue, especially with their runways.

5. September 8 - 14, 2008. Reno, Nevada: National Championship Air Races at Stead Field. If you have not been before, GO. Every Navion owner, pilot, aviator, or just airplane fan must see these races at least once. I got bitten by the Reno bug in 1971 and the bite still itches. Details at www.airrace.org. Call Ken Whittall-Scherfee if you're interested in purchasing a seat or two in the box seating area. Tickets there go for $80.00 per person, per day, including VIP parking and a pitt pass for the day. And, we Navion folks have our own special event every year - - - - -

6. September 12, 2008. Third Annual Navion Dinner at Reno during Race Week. Gold 'n' Silver Restaurant in downtown Reno. We will have 35 - 50 Navion lovers from all around the U.S.A. converging at this dinner for some great conversation and socializing. Cocktails at 5:30 p.m., no host bar, with buffet dinner in our own banquet room at 6:45 p.m. Dinner is $25.00 per person including tax and tip. This is not a fly-in, but you CAN fly in for all of race week and park your plane at either Reno International (KRNO) or Carson City (KCXP), or even Truckee, California (KTRK).

7. September 20, 2008. GGN fly-in at a location TBD. Please provide suggestions by July 20 to me via e-mail or at Concord on July 19.

8. October 9 - 11, 2008. Golden Gate Chapter joint weekend flyaway to EITHER Bend, Oregon region OR Laughlin, NV. If Bend, we'll coordinate with the NW Chapter. If Laughlin, we'll join with the Imperial Valley Chapter. Mark your calendars now.

9. November 8, 2008. Fly-In to McClellan Field, Sacramento (KMCC) for a barbecue at Ken's hanger. Arrive by 11:00 a.m., park on WEST side of 16/34 using the Kilo taxiway and park where the hangers begin on your right. Lots of aircraft parking, bathrooms, and lots of space for a barbecue. We'll eat at 12:30 p.m. Rain won't stop us! We'll just move inside the hangers.

10. December, 2008. Golden Gate Navioneers Christmas Party at Alamo. Details pending.

That's it for now. Enjoy your flying season! I look forward to seeing you at a Fly-In soon. As always, if you need to reach me on a fly-in date, call me on my cell phone at (916) 284-7401.

Flyin Information Update

Good Morning, Navioneers!

Fuel prices are falling, severe VFR conditions dominate Northern California, and tomorrow is the fly-in to Paso Robles (KPRB). So what could be better than this? FREE FOOD. Yup, you read that correctly.

Kerry Langford, a Navioneer very active in the former 805th Squadron, informed me yesterday that the Warbird Museum at Paso Robles will gladly provide FREE FOOD to Navioneers arriving at Paso Robles tomorrow, August 23 for the fly-in. That free food will include hamburgers, potato salad, and related fixings. Should you take Kerry up on his offer, PLEASE make a nice donation to the Museum he's helping with at PRB (nice means around $3.00 per person), and also take the time to view the museum. They have a very cool F-18 simulator for all Tom Cruise wannabees to play with.

To get to the FREE FOOD, upon arrival at KPRB, taxi to the south end of Runway 1/19 (i.e., the approach end for Runway 1), then take the taxiway east to the parking at the museum's taxiway. That taxiway is designated as taxiway F. If in any doubt, call Kerry on CTAF at 123.0 and he can direct you. If you get to the approach end of Runway 31, you've gone too far. If you're lost on the ground at KPRB, please call Kerry Langford on his cell phone, (805) 710-1987. Have a great time. I, unfortunately, must remain on the ground to tend to domestic chores.

If you do not care about the FREE FOOD, your option is to head to Matthew's, located near the tower on the west side of the field. Plan to arrive at Matthew's by 11:15 a.m. to avoid the lunch rush.

Only TWENTY-NINE DAYS remain for you to get in your reservation at the Riverhouse for our fly-away to Bend, Oregon. This is our joint fly-in with the Northwest Navioneers. As of yesterday, the Riverhouse now has only 14 rooms left in our block of rooms for October 10 - 12, so get with it if you plan to stay in Bend at The Riverhouse. Details and further instructions are in my prior e-mail to you regarding the Bend, Oregon Fly-In.

Have a great time flying your Navion this weekend!

ADDITION TO FLY-IN SCHEDULE: October 4, 2008 is the Lincoln Airport Day & Airshow. This is another opportunity to display your Navion and get a certificate of attendance for tax purposes. Details are at www.lincolnairportday.com. Scheduled performers include Julie Clark, Tim Decker, Bill Stein, Warren Pietsch, and Eddie Andreini. And, the following weekend we go to Bend, Oregon as described further in my prior e-mail earlier this month.

We have great weather for VFR flying, and fuel prices are dropping. Two great reasons to Go Fly Your Navion. Thanks for your time.

September 20 we will fly to Harris Ranch near Coalinga, CA for lunch. Please arrive by 1100 PDT. Great beef, the smell of money, and a fine little strip await us. And, we will look forward to meeting up with Steve V. and his family. Maybe we will see the famous Harley that competes with the Navion for Steve's leisure time.

Now, as promised and hinted at in the past, we have details about the fly-away for October 10 - 12, 2008. We will join the Northwest Navioneers at BEND, OREGON for three days and two nights. Plan to arrive by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10. Our host motel is The Riverhouse. Details are available at www.riverhouse.com for your information. We have arranged a block of rooms, for only $125.00 per night, plus tax. To book your reservation, you must call The Riverhouse at (800) 547-3928 and tell the booking agent you are part of The Navion West Coast Fly-In Group. If you do not, you will not get the group rate. Reserve by September 20, 2008. This is a beautiful place to stay, bordering the Deschutes River on the north side of Bend. Planned activities include:

- Reception/cocktail hour at the Riverhouse on Friday, October 10 from 5:30 p.m. - 6:45 p.m.
- Tours of aircraft factories located in Bend. We are working on touring the former Columbia plant (now Cessna), Lancair, and Epic. Details pending.
- Dawn patrol on Saturday morning, October 11 from Bend airport, overflying the town of Sisters, flying past The Sisters and Mount Bachelor as the sun just rises, an air tour of Crater Lake, and breakfast at the Sunriver Lodge. We will be wheels up from Bend by 0630, with a briefing at the airport by 0610. We should be back at the Bend airport by 9:30 a.m.
- Golf at The Riverhouse at reduced rates. Contact The Riverhouse for tee times.

Further details about this great fly-in will be provided in the immediate future. For car rentals, contact Professional Air at KBDN, (541)388-0019. We will also have a van from The Riverhouse available for supplemental trips from the airport to The Riverhouse, and back. And, rumor has it the FBO will provide us with a fuel discount!

Finally, mark your calendars for December 19, 2008: The 2008 Golden Gate Navioneers' Christmas Party at the Alamo Women's Club. Details pending, but please set the date aside. Johannes V. has taken the laboring oar on arranging this event, and it will be splendid. Families are warmly welcome to attend.

If you are planning to attend any fly-in, please contact other GGN members in your vacinity to share a ride, or give a ride to someone who might not otherwise be able to make it due to mechanicals, medical conditions, or anything else. We can really increase turnout this way, and you might learn a thing or two from the person flying with you.

That is all for now, so go fly your Navion!

As a new Navion owner I'm starting to collect information that may be of use to other's. Some of this comes from other Navion interest sites on the web and some comes from other sources. Some of this will be old news but some is hot off the presses. This is especially true if you haven't done a 337 lately. - Bill (Webmaster)
